There are a lot of different kinds of therapy, and an even wider range therapists, so what can you expect when working with me?

I am a depth-oriented therapist, which means that a lot of our work together will involve looking at the root of your struggles. I am happy to help you develop coping skills and tools for better living, but the majority of our time together, at least initially, will involve figuring out how you got where you are today.

I like to use the analogy of going to the doctor for a broken arm. You wouldn’t just ask for medication to numb the pain of the break, you’d ask for a cast so the bone can be reset and fully healed. That’s how I view therapy. If we don’t actually get to the bottom of what you’re experiencing - hurt, shame, anxiety, people pleasing - we’re just putting bandaids on the real problem. I believe that understanding the source of our difficulties puts us in the best position to move forward in healthier ways.

We can’t undo things that have happened in the past, but we can choose to understand them, learn from them, and find healing so they no longer negatively impact us. Through our work together, we’ll expose negative patterns, beliefs, and coping skills that have developed over time. We will approach these with compassion, recognizing they were created for a reason, and replace them with more true words and kinder ways or living.

Therapy is a safe space for you to tell your story without judgement and gives us an opportunity to work together to develop insight and understanding into why you do what you do and feel the way you feel. Together, we’ll work through how you got where you are, what’s keeping you stuck, and figure out how to move forward.
