Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach that addresses the storage of memory and how it impacts our experience. The foundation of EMDR is that when traumatic memories occur, they do not get processed correctly and are stored maladaptively in the brain. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements) to reprocess memories and reintegrate them into the correct memory networks so that disturbing memories no longer cause emotional distress.
